And now Little Jimmy is James. And he is still technically gifted and has made a name for himself in the IT World he finds himself in.
But those childhood memories run deep… And now he has some power! Now he is “the bomb” in his field.
But…
He doesn’t want anyone else to know what he knows! He talks down to the new network administrators just trying to learn new things.
Perhaps subconsciously he feels threatened by them, so he gives them the cold shoulder. He makes them feel like idiots when they ask a question. He chuckles, thinking to himself, “Everyone should know that! That is Easy!”
This my friends, is the “Nerd-Complex”. You’ve witnessed it first hand, I’m sure…
Any certainly not everyone is like this, but unfortunately there are many of them out there.
And when you bump up against one of them, don’t let the arrogance get to you.
This stuff can be easily learned, if you have the right materials to learn from. And you don’t need to go to them for the answers.
I found myself in a similar situation back in 1995.
I had been doing some Windows NT Administration and it was cool, but I wanted more.
I saw that Cisco router sitting up in that rack and wondered what it would take to get “behind the wheel” of that thing.
“If I could just have the chance to learn it and prove myself”, I thought to myself…, “But how could I ever learn?”
